About the album

The Jazz faculty that Western Michigan University quietly assembled over the years is an impressive collection of internationally significant artists. Having gathered in Kalamazoo from their bases in New York, Los Angeles and Boston, the teaching colleagues became bandmates with the formation of the Western Jazz Collective, and Dark Journey reveals the magic when time, place and happenstance collide. Offering new views into the music of saxophonist/composer Andrew Rathbun, the septet of Rathbun, trumpeter Scott Cowan, guitarist Matt Landon, pianist Matthew Fries, bassist John Hébert, and drummer Keith Hall, along with the special vocalese contributions of Greg Jasperse, unveil expansive musical landscapes, rich in nuance, dynamics and texture.

Andrew Rathbun (clarinet)

Saxophonist, composer, bandleader and Toronto native Andrew Rathbun has achieved a rare depth of lyricism, authoritative swing and compositional intelligence in nearly 20 years as a recording artist. His work is rooted in modern jazz but also deeply informed by classical composition — his recordings have included adaptations of Ravel, Mompou and Glück, among others. He has written big band commissions for the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, the Metropole Orkest and other ensembles, and performed and composed commercial music for roughly 10 years as well.  Another of Rathbun's inspirations is poetry: his recordings Jade and True Stories set to music the verse of Cathy Song and Margaret Atwood, respectively (both albums featured acclaimed Brazillian vocalist Luciana Souza)....

His 2002 release Sculptures featured trumpet legend and Toronto native Kenny Wheeler in a set that "cloak[s] subtle avant-garde proclivities in soft light and open air" (JazzTimes). Rathbun has also tackled political subjects with his large-ensemble work "Power Politics Suite" and his 2007 quintet session Affairs of State. His other recordings of note are Renderings (duo with pianist George Colligan), Days Before and After (co-led with drummer Owen Howard), Shadow Forms (featuring George Garzone), Where We Are Now (featuring Billy Hart), The Idea of North and Numbers & Letters. Rathbun earned a Masters in Performance from Boston's New England Conservatory, where he studied with George Garzone, Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell. He became a fixture on the New York jazz scene during his years in Brooklyn, helping to shape the sound of the music in the new millennium as he earned a Doctorate in Jazz Arts from Manhattan School of Music. He is currently Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, where he lives with his family. He continues to perform in New York and internationally.

Matthew Fries (keyboard)

Pianist, Matthew Fries, has been making waves in the jazz world as both a soloist and accompanist. The winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, his debut album, Song for Today (TCB Music) was named a 2001 critics pick by Jazziz Magazine, and his continuing work with his collaborative trio, TRI-FI, “takes on the Jazz Trio challenge and delivers a ‘knock out’ punch” (Jazz Review). As a sideman his work has been described as “the best jazz accompaniment I’ve seen in a cabaret in years” (The New York Times), and “the crispest rhythm section imaginable” (The London Times). Matthew has been playing piano all his life. Matthew has been playing piano all his life. He was born in the small town of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a musical home. His mother was a classical singer. His father was a professor of piano at Susquehanna University and was Matthew’s first teacher, teaching him piano and music theory. During high school he played trumpet and sang in school choruses, but returned to piano after a college jazz history course awakened his interest in jazz piano. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Ithaca College and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from The University of Tennessee, where he taught undergraduate classes and studied with jazz piano great, Donald Brown. Matthew now lives and works in New York City. He tours frequently with his collaborative trio, TRI-FI, and with singer, Curtis Stigers, as a regular member of his band. He continues to perform with a diverse lineup of artists that has included Stacey Kent, DeeDee Bridgewater, Vincent Herring, Steve Wilson, Dave Samuels, Claudio Roditi, Terell Stafford, and many others.
